HP Makes a Promising Comeback With Elitebook 1020 G1 Special Edition

According to the reports published by IDC and Granter, HP bagged the No. 2 position in the list of ‘Top 5 Vendors, Worldwide PC Shipments, 2013.’ The company has a reputation of delivering supreme quality and performance in the past, and it continues to deliver the same by offering the latest Elitebook 1020 G1 Special Edition.

The new HP EliteBook is ideally a business-class notebook, but carries consumer-friendly features that make your computing experience better and pleasant. You will not get the touchscreen support in this HP computer, but the company claims it to be amongst the best laptops, which a business user can ever have. The G1 Special Edition is an extension to the existing EliteBook 820 G1 series, which was excellent on performance, but had short battery life and a pedestrian design. The company is now providing carbon fiber built, 12.5-inch, 2560 x 1440 QHD display and Intel Core M-5Y51 processor to offer amazing performance in these portable HP laptops.

Weighing around 2.2-pounds and measuring 31 x 21 x 1.57 cm all new G1 Special Edition is the lightest and thinnest business notebook by the company. This year’s business notebook is quite similar to the last year design, and the lid and keyboard deck features a combination of magnesium-lithium alloy. The device’s built features carbon on the bottom side and have an HP logo engraved right at the center of the lid. The combination of carbon fiber and magnesium-lithium makes this device durable enough to meet the military's MIL-STD-810G standards, resistant to drops, shocks, and extreme temperatures.

The fan-less device will ensure quiet performance and makes it ideal for vacations, business tours, travels, and boardroom meetings. The device provides a premium keyboard and ForcePad that makes this device extremely pleasant to use the touch gestures for better navigation.

Display and input

The Special Edition features a 12.5-inch screen with a 2560 x 1440 QHD display, resulting in images with high clarity and vibrant appeal. The subject and images are deep enough to set the mood, but doesn’t offer hyper-realistic as some of the other units available in the market.

The device is paired up with a premium keyboard with evenly spaced, and perfectly heightened keys that offer easy and comfortable typing experience. The keyboard sits right above the ergonomically appropriate touchpad that supports ForcePad technology and removes the clicking function. The device eliminates the need of scroll and clicks as the ForcePad technology only requires simple taps to perform computing basics. The company doesn’t incorporate the touchscreen support to this device, but the Special Edition notebook is an ideal laptop for all-day use.

Ports and additional features

The device comes with limited yet usable port bucket and features an HDMI port, two USB ports, and a MicroSD reader. This Special Edition comes with a docking port with a capability to power up to two displays that you won’t find in any of the laptops offered within the cheap laptops range. The company completely understands the security constraint of business users, hence, equips the device with fully-loaded HP's fingerprint reader, Sure Start BIOS, TouchPoint Manager and Client Security features.

Audio, Camera, and Communications

The extremely light and portable notebook features HD audio with DTS Studio Sound to cater your entertainment needs. The device also possesses integrated dual-microphone array for meeting web chat requirements and two integrated stereo speakers to turn your room into a party-like atmosphere. You can make use of the HP’s Noise Reduction Software to enjoy your movies, videos, and music files at its best. A 720p HD webcam mounts at the center of the display to meet your image clicking, web chatting, and business conferencing requirements.

You can take advantage of the Ethernet via accessory dongle (optional) and Near Field Communication - NFC (optional) to enjoy seamless file transferring activities. An Intel 802.11a/b/g/n/as (2x2) and Bluetooth 4.0 Combo is provided to offer excellent connectivity to the device.

Performance

HP EliteBook
The device carries the Intel Core M-5Y51 processor with a 4 MB cache; two cores cache speed to deliver extremely fast performance and maintain a productive environment. The Intel HD Graphics 5300 card and processor’s Intel Turbo Boost Technology works together to ensure optimal performance and seamless productivity. The device also incorporates an integrated chipset with the processor for ensuring optimal browsing, fast application load, and hassle-free movie and video watching experience.

The device is operating on Windows 8.1 Pro 64- bit architecture and carries an 8 GB LPDDR3 SD RAM and 128 GB of system storage with up to 512 GB SATA SSD. Unfortunately, the device comes with only 9 hours of battery life on a single charge. Hence, you'll have to keep the charger with you or stay charged to work for long stretches. Power-packed with amazing features and excellent configuration, this extremely portable and powerful HP computer is planning to hit the global PC market during April 2015.

Early verdict

You might have observed some obvious limitations of the HP EliteBook 1020 G1 Special Edition, but touchscreen isn’t the only feature that can decide the success of an HP computer. You might have scanned hundreds of designs and options while looking for the best laptop deals, but the G1’s amazing configuration and powerful features will force you to give this gadget a thought. It is agreeable that touchscreen freaks won't prefer this machine, and resolution lovers will buy units from Apple, Samsung, and Lenovo. But HP has an audience of its own, and those are the performance-oriented users and security lovers. Featuring a fan-less design, optimal grip, high portability, and power-packed performance, the Special Edition won't be easily hacked and will deliver optimal productivity during long stretches. The company hasn’t disclosed the price of its latest Special Edition HP laptops, but this super lightweight laptop will come out swinging in 2015.
