Apple’s
OS X and Microsoft’s Windows operating systems have always fought for being
acclaimed as the most awesome and productive OS in the global markets, and the
picture hasn’t changed yet! Sometimes, users might comment that OS X series is
quite costly and unaffordable while Windows offer better features and tools at
a cheaper price. In a reply, Apple users always defend by saying that the OS
X’s features are premium and are more advanced. Well, the battle can’t be won
easily as Mac OS X had come with the latest features years ago, and Windows
follows the same or improves the existing features later on. Researchers have
found that many of the Windows 10’s best features like virtual desktops,
expose-like window management, and a notification center was introduced by
Apple ages ago.
Since,
users don’t bother about who invented what first, Microsoft should borrow these
5 top features from Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite for its Windows 10:
1. Offering free upgrades
This
feature got introduced first with the Mavericks 10.9 in 2013. By accessing
this, all the existing Mac users were allowed to upgrade to the latest version
of Mac OS X for free. Tech experts suggested that Microsoft should also do this
for at least all the Windows 8 users and allow them to upgrade to Windows 10
for free. If Microsoft will support this feature, then all the developers could
easily target Windows 10. Normal users can easily use the updated Windows
version for accessing those new ‘universal apps’ and improved DirectX 12 for
boosting gaming performance. It necessarily means that Microsoft should make
Windows updates free, and it can still charge Windows licensing fees.
2. Allow streamline support for desktop App Store
Yosemite
comes with a desktop Mac App Store that allows all Apple device users to
download and install desktop apps on the device easily. Windows 10 would work
amazingly if it agrees to do the same because allowing desktop apps into the
Windows Store will ensure easy installation and excellent connectivity. On a
Mac, users can easily get apps from outside the Mac App Store and install them
after agreeing to a warning, but Microsoft doesn’t support this. By allowing
this on Windows Store too, Microsoft can prevent side loading and force
‘universal apps’ to avoid scams out of its Windows Store.
3. Window translucency to enhance OS appeal
Yosemite
includes more transparency, technically referred as translucency, to keep the
user engaged and impressed by its transparent windows appeal. Windows 7’s Aero
Glass look offered the same approach. However, Microsoft totally removed it
with the release of Windows 8. But, Windows 10 is smarter about this and offers
drop shadows on the desktop and excellent visual depth. Microsoft should look
forward to adding Windows Aero-like transparency back to the OS as the feature
doesn’t put any impact on battery life.
4. Continuity is the future
Continuity
simply deals with making your laptop or desktop work better, when paired with
your Smartphone or tablet. Apple’s Yosemite supports this feature amazingly by
letting you handle an email you’re writing between your Smartphone and laptop,
and by receiving phone calls on your laptop. Not only Apple, but Google’s
Chrome OS is also gaining some similar features to make it work better with all
the paired Android devices. Windows 10 can also think of adopting this feature
at least with the Windows Phone.
5. New Icons and a Visual Redesign
Yosemite
has undergone a big visual redesign, and it now features a lot of new, updated,
and modern-looking icons. Windows is following the same icons and appeal since
ages therefore it desperately needs a change. Windows 8 still contains many
icons and interface factors that date back to Windows XP or older versions. As
Microsoft enjoys a good market position, the company should hire an artist to
create some modern and exciting icons to impart Windows 10 with cohesive and
fresh look.
Conclusion
All
of the above mentioned changes should be adopted by Microsoft to make an
entirely new version of Windows with added and interesting features. Windows
users have been watching the same age-old appeal and icon since ages, thus, the
OS now strives for a change towards betterment. It’s a high time that the
company should forget its patchwork approach of updating some of the elements
and ignoring others. Experts recommend that the developers should also consider
the mode of operations while designing an OS as Mac OS X always knows that it’s
a desktop operating system. The Preview version of Windows 10 is already out,
hopefully, the company will consider these points and come up with something
refreshing!
